DES MOINES, IOWA — The Iowa Hotel & Lodging Association (IHLA) is proud to announce that Hotel Millwright in Amana was selected as the recipient of IHLA’s 2024 Sustainability & Innovation Award, sponsored by WoodRiver Energy. This award aims to acknowledge, encourage, and inspire sustainable practices among Iowa’s hoteliers.
The Amana Society, which owns the historic 8-acre mill complex built in 1855, transformed part of the textile mill into a 65-room hotel, opening it to guests in 2020. Sustainability was an integral part of the redevelopment. To reduce water usage and waste, native plants were used in the landscaping, and a storm retention pond was built. The Amana Society also partnered with state agencies to install a methane digester, which converts methane gas into electricity.
"Sustainable preservation allows the Amana Society to maintain the colonies' identity for future generations while supporting environmental stewardship and responsible resource management," said Jeff Popenhagen, Chief Revenue Officer of the Amana Society. "Guests at Hotel Millwright value our commitment to sustainability and have the chance to see these practices firsthand."
“Sustainability is essential to the future of Iowa’s hospitality industry. By joining with WoodRiver Energy to recognize hotels like Hotel Millwright, we showcase the innovative efforts happening right here in our state to protect resources, preserve historic spaces, and reduce environmental impact,” said Jessica Dunker, president and CEO of the Iowa Hotel & Lodging Association. “These initiatives not only benefit the hospitality industry but also strengthen Iowa’s communities and natural environment. We're proud to celebrate their leadership in building a greener future for Iowa hospitality.”
"We're honored to serve as the energy partner for the IHLA," said Don Krattenmaker, COO of WoodRiver Energy. "The Amana Society has successfully revitalized this historic property, turning it into an integral part of the community while embracing and advancing sustainability in preserving historic buildings."
Hotel Millwright was honored with the IHLA Sustainability & Innovation Award at this year’s IHLA Industry Awards Ceremony that took place on October 2, 2024.
